A painful case out of Southampton, England is now reverberating well beyond the U.K. After 18-year-old Henry Nowak was stabbed and later died while in police custody, senior U.S. officials publicly condemned what happened. Downing Street, in turn, pushed back, warning outsiders not to inflame tensions or turn a family’s grief into a political weapon.

What happened
Authorities say Nowak, a freshman student, was returning home from an evening playing soccer with friends on Dec. 3, 2025, when he encountered Vikram Digwa, 23. Digwa, a British Sikh man of Indian heritage, was wearing a turban and carrying a Sikh kirpan, a ceremonial knife that can be lawfully carried in some circumstances due to religious belief.
Nowak recorded part of the encounter. In the video, Nowak calls Digwa a “bad man.” Digwa responds, “I am a bad man,” and then stabs Nowak five times, including a fatal wound to the chest.
When police arrived, body-worn camera footage shows Digwa alleging racial abuse and claiming Nowak removed his turban. Officers then handcuffed Nowak and took him into custody on suspicion of making racial remarks, even as he lay on the ground. In the footage, Nowak repeatedly says he cannot breathe and tries to tell officers he has been stabbed.
One officer is heard replying, “Don’t think you have, mate.” Nowak ultimately died while in custody.
Court outcomes
Digwa was found guilty of murder at Southampton Crown Court and was sentenced on June 1 to life in prison with a minimum term of 21 years.
The case also involved Digwa’s mother, Kiran Kaur. Prosecutors said Digwa called her and she reached the scene before police, then took the knife away to the family home and hid it. She was found guilty of assisting an offender and is scheduled to be sentenced July 17.
U.S. condemnation
The Trump administration addressed the case publicly this week, with the State Department posting on X: “Ideological conditioning and two-tiered policing are glaring symptoms of civilizational decline. They must be rejected across the West. The United States sends our condolences to the family of Henry Nowak and the people of the United Kingdom at this troubling time.”
Vice President JD Vance went further, describing the case as evidence of a broader cultural and political breakdown. “Henry Nowak died the same way a civilization dies: abandoned, handcuffed by authorities who neither trusted nor cared for him, and accused of hate crimes he did not commit,” he wrote on X.
Vance also tied the incident to his criticism of mass migration in Europe, arguing that Western leaders had failed to “stand their ground” and that the United States should prioritize preserving “western civilization.”
U.K. response
British officials responded by cautioning against rhetoric that could increase social tension. A Downing Street spokesperson said: “In recent days we have seen people trying to interfere in our democracy and seeking to stir up division on our streets.”
The spokesperson also pointed to the family’s wishes: “The Nowak family are grieving after Henry’s horrific murder. They have said they do not want his death to be used to create further division, hatred or tension. We should be respecting their wishes.”
That response is as much about governance as it is about diplomacy. When a tragedy becomes a proxy battle over national identity, it can intensify fear and resentment in ways that outlast the news cycle.

Local police later apologized for the way officers handled the incident.
