Donald Trump stated on October 12 that “THE BIDEN FBI PLACED 274 AGENTS INTO THE CROWD ON JANUARY 6.” The assertion contains a factual impossibility: Joe Biden didn’t become president until January 20, 2021, two weeks after the Capitol attack. The FBI operating on January 6, 2021 reported to Trump’s administration.

The number 274 appears to originate from the FBI’s own accounting of agents deployed in response to the developing crisis – crisis response teams sent after rioters breached the Capitol perimeter. Trump’s current FBI Director, Kash Patel, confirmed this interpretation in September, stating the agents were “thrown into crowd control” after the attack began.

What the Inspector General Actually Found

A December 2024 Justice Department inspector general investigation examined whether FBI personnel were embedded in the January 6 crowds before violence erupted. The findings were unambiguous.

Zero undercover FBI employees participated in the protest or riot. The bureau had 26 confidential sources – civilians who provide information to the FBI but aren’t employees – who attended Washington DC events that day. Three of those sources had been specifically tasked with reporting on potential domestic terrorism threats. Twenty-three attended on their own initiative.

Four confidential sources entered the Capitol building without FBI authorization. None were directed by the agency to participate in illegal activity.
