The sound of gunfire shattered the pre-Thanksgiving calm in downtown Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, just blocks from the White House. In an instant, a political and constitutional debate over the militarization of our nation’s capital turned into a scene of bloodshed. Two National Guard members were shot and critically wounded, an event that transforms an abstract legal argument into a visceral national tragedy.

This shooting is not an isolated crime. It is a direct and violent collision with the controversial federal policy that has placed thousands of soldiers on the streets of an American city. It forces a reckoning with the costs and consequences of using the military for domestic policing.

Trump promised to keep law and order and he means business! FAFO! Anyone who breaks the law or attacks our National Guard will get what's coming to them. Time to send a strong message to these criminals. Stay strong Mr. President, we need your leadership now more than ever! πŸ’ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ #MAGA

You seem to forget he dodged the draft. He wanted no part of the fight. He is a coward.

Kevin C

Get real! Many upstanding men avoided the draft. It doesn't make all of them cowards, just someone who didn't believe in what the military was about and who they went up against.

kathy

he didnt dodge the draft. He was deferred….for medical reasons….the same reason that my ex was chaptered OUT after 17 years of service in the army. Why dont you look into what Biden was doing at that time….he was also deferred….more times than Trump was. Only Biden wasnt deferred for medical reasons.

When did Obamination and Obiden Serve in the Military? Obamination-Never and incited Riots to boot, stripping Police of their Powers and putting targets on their backs, while funding terrorism and terrorists, inporting terrorists, making him a treasonous Traitor to the Constitution. And OBiden, he never served either! Trump was in college, I was told by my Korean War Veteran Father that I was going to Canada, just as I got my letter from the war department that I was no longer needed! You?

Pat

As did President Clinton, who dodged the draft!!! Did you speak up then? I'd bet not!!!!!

NavVet

Wrong little girl. He was given a waver for bone spears. In case you did not know when in boot camp they have to march with a field pack and if needed they have to be able to assist an other soldier who is wounded. That is for the most part impossible with bone spears. My son was rejected for acne which is not an issue in combat. May I remind you that the democrats put a coward named Walz up for VP after he deserted his unit because they where being deployed. That is a coward not some one who is granted a waver. I gusee you also forget that Causus Clay dodged the draft because he claimed C.Objector after he murdered an other man in the ring when he knew the man would die. That is a COWARD. Put on the uniform and then go into a battle zone like I and many others did.

heartbreaking

Wynona

Yes, it is.

Mary May

Sad to see law&order being disrespected! These brave troops trying to protect us & get attacked?! Disgusting!

Wynona

It doesn't appear the shooter of the National Guard troops was using rubber bullets. Sure puts the men and women of the National Guard at a disadvantage.

George

YEP, in Beirut Lebanon 1983-84 we had live rounds but had to have "Permission" to return fire. hence: 249 lives plus were Lost due to that order

The ONLY WAY to stop these hostile riots is to fight fire with fire. They need to know that when they use vehicles or weapons against our law and authority, they are placing themselves in peril of being shot. Their silly game is over and requires drastic measures. If they do not agree, they can always leave to another country where they would use machineguns.

DR

AMEN!!!

Dianne

These people the Guard and Police are fighting are dangerous and make no bones about hurting or killing another person. They’re crazy!!! Our guardsmen and police need to be armed sufficiently to protect themselves.

DR

Fight fire with fire; they use live ammo. THE NATIONAL GUARD USES LIVE AMMO. Rubber bullets are NOT a deterrent! We need to take off the "kid gloves"; these are CRIMINALS, PERIOD!!! I have gone to protests, with signs, NOT GUNS!

Ed

Zero rules of engagement, ass holes are just that ass holes. They bring their attitude into our hood they won’t walk away…………

I was born in Jan. 1940. I put my time in the military. I have seen this country go from a great place to live to a violent, do whatever you want place. You cannot go a day without seeing violence or death. Glad that I only have a little time left here.

Kim R

This country has rapidly gone downhill. Get rid of the illegals as they break the law and are criminals by doing so. Get rid of the Demo-craps who incite violence. Get rid of all welfare and they will flee. The sex you were born with is what you are. Stop the madness now🧨

Doris Eckhart

President Trump should have the authority to send the National Guard to every city that is needs law and order.

Donald L Crum

Yes, most likely the attackers have real live ammo and so should the national guard. Most likely the shooter knew this and was not afraid.

Jim

I think it would be a great idea for the law enforcement personnel to use paint balls to control these situations. The criminals wearing the bright ball splatters would be the first to nab for arrest.

keith

thats stupid if you are being shot at you should be able to protect yourself real ammo real response real penalties !

Joseph

Rubber bullets are not a deterent. These criminals need to know that live ammo will be used.

Mary C

The DEMOCRATS have purposely and willfully ENCOURAGED ATTACKS ON LAW ENFORCEMENT as well called for VIOLENCE with MAXINE WATERS LEADING IT!

Dennis

Yes

Sam Wayman

When I was on guard duty in the army I had a rifle and no ammo.I thought it was unsafe for me.If someone broke in I was the one that could get shot.

Aman

It would be awesome if the judge watched his family members brutally murdered in DC blocks away from where National Guard members were keeping citizens safe. Let's hear the response from the judge then.

Mike

Every thing I see on this survey is common sense. It is not hard to pick right from wrong. There are several democrats that are telling our Military not to obey Trump's leadership. The democrats want cahos in our country even tho I don't spell cahos correctly.

ANYONE who is attacked for any reason should have the right to defend themselves.

What We Know About the Attack

The shooting occurred near the Farragut West Metro station, a busy intersection less than a mile from the White House, which was immediately placed on lockdown.

According to authorities, a suspect is in custody and was also shot during the confrontation. The motive remains unclear, but the target was unmistakable: uniformed members of the National Guard who were deployed as part of the administration’s “law and order” initiative in the District. President Trump, monitoring the situation from Florida, condemned the “animal” responsible and warned they would pay a “very steep price.”

A Deployment on Legal Borrowed Time

The context of this shooting is critical. Just last week, a federal judge ruled that the very deployment these soldiers were part of is likely unlawful.

The judge found that the use of out-of-state National Guard troops for domestic law enforcement in D.C. likely violates the Posse Comitatus Act, which generally forbids the use of the military to police American citizens. However, the judge paused the order for three weeks to allow for an orderly transition, meaning these soldiers were patrolling on legal borrowed time. The order to remove them was set to take effect on December 11th.

The Constitutional Cost of Militarized Streets

This tragedy brings the constitutional debate over the Insurrection Act and the federalization of the National Guard into sharp, painful focus.

When soldiers are deployed to perform police duties, they become targets in a way that civilian law enforcement often does not. They are visible symbols of federal power and, in this case, of a deeply polarizing political directive. The shooting raises the agonizing question of whether the presence of these troops, intended to project order, has instead become a flashpoint for violence.

The attack on these service members is a horrific crime that demands justice. But it is also a somber reminder of why the framers of the Constitution and the authors of the Posse Comitatus Act were so wary of using the military as a domestic police force. The blurring of the line between soldier and police officer carries a heavy price, one that is now being paid in blood on the streets of our capital.
